Transfer Methods
In order to keep hackers out, we use a highly proprietory file transfer system called RiteTransfer.
Although this is an FTP program, you can not upload to it with any FTP client programs other
than its own. There is no download function.
If you wish to send files to
us using this method, send an email to Jefferson.
Be sure to indicate whether you are using a Macintosh or PC computer so that the correct installer
can be sent by return email, along with installation and usage instructions.
Files less than 5MB may simply
be emailed to Jefferson.
We also happily receive files
on CDs, DVDs and memory sticks. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact
Jefferson either by email or by calling 520.623.4775.
Preferred
File Types
If you are using Adobe InDesign on a Macintosh computer, using the
Package function (including all fonts) found under the File
menu is your best choice. This will allow us to make any alterations
you may request.
For all
other programs and computer types, a print quality PDF is best. We
happily accept native files from other programs created on a Macintosh
or PC computer, but to ensure the best job possible with the least
amount of problems, we recommend that print quality PDFs be used.
Print Quality PDFs
You may be able to print or export directly to PDF. In some cases,
you will need to Print to File or create Postscript which
is then distilled to a PDF.
The names of the presets for
creating print quality PDFs vary. They are typically called Press, Press Quality
or High Quality Print. Be sure that the Compatiblity setting is set to the most
recent version of Acrobat.
We prefer
that under the Marks and Bleeds section you turn all marks
off and set the Bleed to .125" on all sides. All PDFs should
include a bleed allowance, whether or not the project requires bleed.
The resulting PDF should have dimensions equal to your trim size plus
.25" (.125" on all sides). A typical 8.5 x 11 document would
be 8.75 x 11.25.
Note:
Adobe Acobat rounds dimensions off to two decimal places and will
falsely report the size of a document requiring more than two decimal
places (5/8ths (.625) is incorrectly shown as .63) when the file is
in fact the correct size. If you wish to be absolutely certain of
a PDFs dimensions, place it in a document and check its properties.
If you have any questions, please
do not hesitate to contact Jefferson either by email
or by calling 520.623.4775.
Imposition
Please allow us to do all imposition. The dimensions of your document
should be the trim size of a single page or piece. If a PDF, bleed
allowance should be included, whether the job bleeds of not. It is
preferred that you send booklets with all parts in consecutive order,
starting with the front cover and ending with the back cover. If a
publication spans mulitple files, see below.
Preferred Naming Conventions
In order to ensure that a low-resolution PDF created for proofing purposes is not accidentally
used to print from, we request that you use identifying characters at the beginning of your
file names.
Use a caret (shift 6) to indicate
a high-resolution file. ^filename.pdf
Use a percent sign (shift 5)
to indicate a low-resolution file. %filename.pdf
If a
publication spans mulitple files, use numbers at the beginning of
file names so there is no confusion as to the order.
